Mughal silk – black is a hand-knotted wool Indian carpet with a touch of silk. Hand-knotted on looms located in the ancient city of Jaipur, this carpet and area rugs inspired William Morris and other Arts and Crafts designers. The design is from a carpet woven during the reign of Jahangir (r.1605-27) when western traders introduced botanical paintings to India. The flower heads appear on a trellis formed by curved serrated leaves. The color palette are the traditional colors of the Rajasthan region where Jaipur is located. Black represents the vastness of the universe and the mysteries of life.
